Intentional Southern Girl Meets Accidental Country Girl

When I started blogging a few years ago, I had a few “must read” blogs that I visited and read with regularity. One of those blogs belonged to a fellow redhead who calls herself The Pioneer Woman. Little did I know where reading a few posts from her site each week would lead.

I started with the chapter by chapter story of how she met the man of her dreams and it was’t long before I was hooked by the daily pictures and updates of her rural existence.

Somewhere along the way she and I took very different paths with our blogs. I flew below the radar, choosing to avoid the limelight, while she grew her readership with witty writing, breathtaking photography and recipes that would make you slap your mama. I’m still trying to figure out where I went wrong.

Pioneer Woman, or PW as all her close friends call her, has taken her blogging success to the next level. She took some of her most popular recipes, photos and stories and married them all together into a best selling cookbook called “The Pioneer Woman Cooks – Recipes From An Accidental Country Girl.”

She has been on a self-proclaimed Griswold Family book signing tour over the past few weeks and as luck would have it, she visited a city close to me last night. And I got to meet her. And she signed my book. And more importantly, she told me I didn’t look as old as I actually am. I’ve decided she can be my friend.

Well, right back at you PW! In fact, maybe your next book should be one that shares your country girl beauty secrets. Until then, I’ll keep reading your blog, trying out your recipes and following your life (in a totally non-stalkerish kind of way) through the fantastic photos and stories you share with us.

And just to think – if I had tried harder, I might be the one autographing a bestseller and enjoying and all that fame and fortune.

Congratulations on your success, PW, and thanks for coming to town.

I forgot my camera (gasp!) so the only pictures I have of last night’s event are from  the thoughtful gals in line behind us. The cute, little blonde with me is my friend, Andi, who is just as big a stalker fan of Pioneer Woman as I am. We had an awesome time!

Meeting Pioneer Woman - she's very friendly!

"Ok girls, chins out and shoulders back." We had a good laugh over that.

The One Where I Try to Catch You Up On Everything

Summer is almost gone. The boys will actually start school a week from Monday. I feel a small twinge of guilt because we haven’t been able to find any time to take a vacation together this summer. A lot of other events have taken place though:

  • Two weddings – nieces on both sides of our families were married this summer.
  • One of those did require a trip to St. Louis. Does that count as a vacation? Didn’t think so.
  • Mother-in-law finally agreed to move into assisted living and created more drama than a daytime soap opera.
  • Sent three boys to church camps, one to running camp, one volunteered at vacation bible school, one had a summer job, one started piano lessons, one watched too much TV and they all tried to eat me out of house and home.
  • Spent a really fun day on the lake with neighbors and friends.
  • Lost Hubby’s dear Aunt Barbie after a long battle with COPD. She was a dear lady and she will be missed terribly.
  • Applied to go back to college to finish my degree and was accepted.
  • Attended my family’s annual reunion. Ate too much.
  • Watched my first baby get his high school senior pictures made. Cried a little.
  • And watched another summer slide quickly by as our busy lives left no time to mourn its passing.

So much has happened in such a short period of time that I haven’t had a lot of time left over to blog. With school starting back and routines and schedules looming on the horizon, I hope to get back into the groove of writing.

Believe me, I have missed you as much as you have missed me. All two of you that is!

Thanks for sticking with me and while I can’t make any promises, I will try to give my blog more attention.

2008 Christmas Tour of My Home

It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone. It seems like it wasn’t that long ago I was packing up these bins to store them away.

But there I was the weekend after Thanksgiving, dragging them all out again and trying to get the house ready for BooMama’s Tour of Homes.

I had plenty of help from my men, and in no time we had four trees up and decorated and most of the halls were decked. Fa la la la la.

This is our main tree in our family room along with the stockings. Which were hung by the chimney. With great care. Because if you remember from last year, the stockings were too heavy for the stocking hangers and I had to resort to the use of duct tape to secure them to the mantle. So far so good this year, but I have an entire roll of duct tape on stand by.

This is the newest tree I have added to the family. I got it on sale last year after Christmas at Walmart. It’s one of those pre-lit “skinny” trees and it fits perfectly in the corner of my eat-in kitchen. I heart it!

Next up is the dining room. Notice the greenery and bow on the light fixture? I stole that idea from the local Holiday Tour of Homes that Sis and I went on. And that spot on the ceiling is really just a shadow from the bow. Didn’t want you to think I had a big spot on my ceiling. That actually is in the kitchen.

Then here is my buffet in the dining room. The trunk you see there was left to my by my Mamaw. She used it as a trunk for her doll clothes when she was a little girl.

Here is an up close look at my treasured doll trunk. A few Christmas balls and a large tassel make it a part of the Christmas decor.

Stay with me; we’re almost done.

Here is the retro tree that resides in the upstairs hallway. It is decorated with colored lights, and handmade ornaments from my Mamaw, and my brother and sister and me when we were kids – like the shrinky dinks that we painted and baked.

This tree now has additional tacky garland and is complete with silver strands of tinsel. You just have to use your imagination because I didn’t feel like taking another picture.

And, if you’ve been counting, you realize that I said we put up and decorated four trees, and there are only three pictured here. Well, the fourth is in the basement and evidently Hubby hasn’t finished decorating “his” tree. So you will just have to take my word about the fourth tree.

So that’s it. Thanks for stopping by and I wish you and yours a Blessed and Merry Christmas!

On Tour

On Saturday, Sis and I spent the day enjoying our local holiday Tour of Homes. When I called earlier in the week to ask Sis if she wanted to accompany me on this little outing, she responded, “Sure, I’m up for coveting other people’s houses.”

So we did. But in a totally nice, complimentary way. I lost count of how many times I said, “Oh, that is soooo cute” or “How cool is that?”

It was a fun day and we did come away with some decorating ideas for the upcoming holidays. I was ready to go home and immediately drag out all my Christmas decorations, but I decided that I would need to wait because I am hosting Thanksgiving dinner and I don’t want my guests to think I’m one of those crazy people who puts up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving.

Even though I usually am!

So I have targeted the Friday after Thanksgiving as my decorating day. Hubby doesn’t know it yet, but he will be pulling out the tree and many, many boxes of decorations we so can get our house ready for BooMama’s Christmas Tour of Homes. It’s not exactly like being in the homes yourself, but these ladies go all out decorating and taking pictures.

If you’re a blogger, I encourage you to join in. If not, then enjoy all the beautifully decorated homes and try not to covet too much! But if you do, just do it in a totally nice, complimentary way. It worked for us!

It’s Been A While

After a much needed and greatly anticipated vacation, I am ready to get back to writing. Because even my most loyal of readers can’t be expected to stick around much longer if I don’t come with something new to post.

Vacation was pure bliss last week. We spent a week at the beach in Destin, FL. The week started out with some pretty “rad” waves, but by Tuesday the Gulf had settled down from the leftover effects of hurricane Ike. The upside of the rough water was that the boys had the chance to get in some boogy board action.

I, on the other hand, was content to sit on the beach with my 50 SPF, hat, sunglasses and t-shirt looking a total beach nerd, because I was trying not to get too muchany sun. The sun and I have long standing relationship that goes way back to around 8th grade; when I was still trying to get a tan like all my other friends. Only to end up with a severe case of sun poisoning and blisters that covered my legs and face. It took me well into my twenties to realize that the only way I would ever get tan would be if all my freckles eventually ran together. Otherwise, it wasn’t going to happen. Hopefully, I stopped trying to be a sun goddess in time to avoid any lasting damage to my skin or the risk of any kind of “noma”. As in “mela.”

That’s why I spent most of my time here:

It’s good to be home. Where the shade is a little bigger.

Filed under All About Me, BlogStuff, The Boys Are Back

I am blogging to you from the beautiful beaches on the gulf coast of Florida. Our boys have the week off from school so this is basically our summer vacation.

We weren’t sure if we would be able to come because of hurricane Ike, but since he decided to “go west young man”, we came on down. (We have family in Houston and were very worried about them the entire time. Thankfully they are all right.)

The waves here were incredible the first couple of days. In fact, the first day the beaches were marked by double red flags – which means do NOT go into the water!

Each day, though, the waves have calmed down and today they were quite calm. I will try to get some pictures up to share in the next couple of days.

In the mean time, I will be having some much needed vacation and family time. And next week, I’ll be back to a more regular schedule.

Puppy Nickel Bread

WordPress has this wonderful feature where you can see what kind of web searches people have done that have led them to your blog. Most recently I was perplexed and then amused by one of those searches.

Evidently when you Google “puppy nickel bread” my blog shows up as one of the recommended web sites for that topic.

I know. It took me a minute, too.

I think someone was looking for pumpernickel bread, and because of my beer bread story that involved a puppy, somehow they were misguided directed to my blog.

Yes, I have googled the phrase, and no, I couldn’t find a link to my blog.

Which certainly causes me much consternation.

Have a great weekend!
