Intentional Southern Girl Meets Accidental Country Girl

When I started blogging a few years ago, I had a few “must read” blogs that I visited and read with regularity. One of those blogs belonged to a fellow redhead who calls herself The Pioneer Woman. Little did I know where reading a few posts from her site each week would lead.

I started with the chapter by chapter story of how she met the man of her dreams and it was’t long before I was hooked by the daily pictures and updates of her rural existence.

Somewhere along the way she and I took very different paths with our blogs. I flew below the radar, choosing to avoid the limelight, while she grew her readership with witty writing, breathtaking photography and recipes that would make you slap your mama. I’m still trying to figure out where I went wrong.

Pioneer Woman, or PW as all her close friends call her, has taken her blogging success to the next level. She took some of her most popular recipes, photos and stories and married them all together into a best selling cookbook called “The Pioneer Woman Cooks – Recipes From An Accidental Country Girl.”

She has been on a self-proclaimed Griswold Family book signing tour over the past few weeks and as luck would have it, she visited a city close to me last night. And I got to meet her. And she signed my book. And more importantly, she told me I didn’t look as old as I actually am. I’ve decided she can be my friend.

Well, right back at you PW! In fact, maybe your next book should be one that shares your country girl beauty secrets. Until then, I’ll keep reading your blog, trying out your recipes and following your life (in a totally non-stalkerish kind of way) through the fantastic photos and stories you share with us.

And just to think – if I had tried harder, I might be the one autographing a bestseller and enjoying and all that fame and fortune.

Congratulations on your success, PW, and thanks for coming to town.

I forgot my camera (gasp!) so the only pictures I have of last night’s event are from  the thoughtful gals in line behind us. The cute, little blonde with me is my friend, Andi, who is just as big a stalker fan of Pioneer Woman as I am. We had an awesome time!

Meeting Pioneer Woman - she's very friendly!

"Ok girls, chins out and shoulders back." We had a good laugh over that.

At Least It Smells Like Fall

Just because the calendar says it’s fall doesn’t mean the weather is in a cooperative mood. We’ve had highs in the 80s this past week and it definitely isn’t sweater weather yet.

I did, however, make some purchases to help move the autumn process along. Febreze has these wonderful fall scents and are, of course, “available for a limited time only.” I found mine at Wally World and bought the two pack. I “really” want my house to smell like fall. Besides I have all these smelly boys running around so I can use all the help I can get. I also picked up some fall inspired candles.

Thankfully football is in full swing and even though the temps outside don’t tell me it’s fall, Saturday College Football and lazy Sunday afternoons with the NFL tell me it is. And football means fall cooking, you know: chili, cornbread, homemade apple sauce, pies – well, you get the picture.

With that in mind, I’m excited that Pioneer Woman has finally finished writing her cookbook and it is now available. In fact she’ll be hitting the road for a (cook) book signing tour and Sis and I are already making our plans to attend when she hits our town.

I love taking pictures in the fall and even though the leaves haven’t started changing color in full force yet, my backyard has a good head start on collecting them. Soon I’ll be forcing asking my boys to pose with pumpkins and scarecrows in order to get that perfect scrapbook page photo. I remember the year I saw this great photo idea where the kids were laying in the leaves and the mom took  their picture from overhead. It was a really cute shot, and even though I tried for about 20 minutes, I just couldn’t duplicate the look. It didn’t help that J, who was about 3 at the time, did not want to lay on the ground in leaves and even though I kept pushing him down patiently trying to convince him, he just wouldn’t cooperate. Maybe this year.

But if you need to catch up on scrapbooking those fall (and if you are like me, every other season) pictures, check out this web site. I haven’t tried them myself yet, but I have great intentions.

So, while I’m not breaking out the flannel jammy pants and sweatshirts yet, I am enjoying college football, chicken nachos and the sweet smell of cinnamon flavored pumpkin spice air freshener.

Now where are those boys of mine? I’m in the mood to take some pictures.

On Tour

On Saturday, Sis and I spent the day enjoying our local holiday Tour of Homes. When I called earlier in the week to ask Sis if she wanted to accompany me on this little outing, she responded, “Sure, I’m up for coveting other people’s houses.”

So we did. But in a totally nice, complimentary way. I lost count of how many times I said, “Oh, that is soooo cute” or “How cool is that?”

It was a fun day and we did come away with some decorating ideas for the upcoming holidays. I was ready to go home and immediately drag out all my Christmas decorations, but I decided that I would need to wait because I am hosting Thanksgiving dinner and I don’t want my guests to think I’m one of those crazy people who puts up Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving.

Even though I usually am!

So I have targeted the Friday after Thanksgiving as my decorating day. Hubby doesn’t know it yet, but he will be pulling out the tree and many, many boxes of decorations we so can get our house ready for BooMama’s Christmas Tour of Homes. It’s not exactly like being in the homes yourself, but these ladies go all out decorating and taking pictures.

If you’re a blogger, I encourage you to join in. If not, then enjoy all the beautifully decorated homes and try not to covet too much! But if you do, just do it in a totally nice, complimentary way. It worked for us!

The Invisible Woman

A friend emailed this to me today, and while it’s a little long (5 minutes 45 seconds), it’s worth a look. Because sometimes we need to be reminded why we do the things we do.

Wordless Wednesday – Along Came “Another” Spider

Several weeks back we had a visit from a rather LARGE member of the arachnid family. This time our visitor was on a smaller, but more colorful scale. I came across this writing spider leaving me a message in my flower garden. If you look closely, I think you can see him spinning the words “Some Gardener.”

Ok. Maybe not. I think I’ve been fairly honest on the subject of my gardening skills before.

Happy Wordless Wednesday! Although, once again I have broken the wordless rule part. I’m sure if you check some other WW’s at 5 Minutes For Mom, they won’t be quite so wordy.

The Self Cleaning Locker

Our boys have home lockers that they use to help keep all of their stuff organized and in one place. As oppposed to their previous plan of attack, which was to leave things scattered all over the house.

They are every useful – the lockers not the boys – however, they do need the occasional purging and cleaning. Because what happens is, when I ask the boys to help pick up the house, they shove everything in their lockers. Not a bad idea in theory but the execution soon becomes a problem as the lockers begin to overflow.

The other day as I sat looking at their lockers and the amount of “stuff” that was in them, I decided it was time for them to be freed from some of their content. When I asked our oldest, M, to start with his, he replied, “Oh, I don’t need to. I have a self-cleaning locker.”

Oh, yeah! Well, somebody sign me up for the self-cleaning house, because I like the sound of that.

Flowers for Daisy

I don’t know Daisy, but she is the dear friend of my Pastor’s wife. And Daisy has cancer. And Daisy is fighting with all the strength she has to try to beat it. She may and she may not. That’s in God’s hands.

But evidently Daisy has touched many lives and has many friends. Some of these friends have created and designed a special set of stamps, in her honor, for scrapbooking or card making. And for every stamp set that is purchased between now and the end of August, $4 will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

Cancer doesn’t discriminate and chances are good that you or someone you know, has been or will be effected by it. Help in the fight against cancer, and buy Flowers for Daisy
